The Cuesta Book of the Year Selection, Black Dove by Ana Castillo, explores themes of racial profiling, police brutality, feminism, and motherhood as defined by the Latino experience in America. The HBO documentary film The Latino List attempts to answer the question, “What does it mean to be a Latino in the 21st century?” Through interviews with 15 prominent Latino men and women including Gloria Estefan, John Leguizamo, Sandra Cisneros, Armando Christian Perez (Pitbull), America Ferrera, and Juan Antonio “Chi-Chi” Rodriguez, the documentary explores the great achievements, struggles, and identity crisis that surrounds the Latino experience. Director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders says he hopes audiences will “leave with the feeling that they have learned a lot and that they look at Latinos in a different way.” Following the film, there will be an engaging discussion.
