PASO ROBLES, CA – March 1, 2021 Wrapping up the Library’s Cuesta Book of the Year Series of bee-themed classes and events is a discussion on Thursday, April 29, 7:00-8:00 pm of the 2008 film based on the bestselling novel, The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. Starring Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning, the film is the moving tale of Lily Owens, a 14-year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father, Lily flees with Rosaleen, her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters, Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping, honey, and the Black Madonna.
Copies are available for check out at the Library. “This film is the perfect ending to our bee-themed month,” remarked Karen Christiansen, Adult Services Librarian. “Both the Cuesta Book of the Year selection The Honey Bus and this film based on The Secret Life of Bees tell of lives redeemed through an interaction with the humble honeybee.” Space is limited.
