We're Flattening the Curve!Flattening the curve has bought us time to expand the capacity in our health care system, by opening an Alternate Care Site at Cal Poly, increasing the County’s ventilator supply, and increasing testing capacity. The County is working on a transition plan for how we return to normal. The County anticipates that the Shelter in Home order will likely remain in place for at least the next two weeks, though they have not officially extended the April 17th expiration date of the order at this time. At that time, the County hopes to have additional epidemiological information to inform a phased reopening plan.
Reopening plans will be made in conjunction with the state. The State of California’s Shelter at Home order is in place until further notice. Governor Newsom has announced a regional plan to be coordinated with Washington and Oregon to reopen economies and mitigate future spread of COVID-19 in the west. Today, he outlined six critical indicators the State will consider before modifying the Stay-at-Home Order. We will of course continue to keep you updated as we hear more. In the meantime, the County has assembled a team of experts from our medical, business, and academic communities who are working with the County on how we transition back to normal, safely and responsibly. The method, manner and timing are critical to continue slowing the spread, managing it over time, and keeping our community safe. You can expect to hear more about the plan as it is being developed.
For now, Let’s keep it going: - Stay home unless performing essential functions
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
- Practice physical distancing=6 ft
- Call and check on neighbors and friends

#PasoStrong Feed those in Need ProgramThere is a new way to virtually support food provision for those in need during this time. The Chamber of Commerce established the “Feed Those in Need” program which allows people to simultaneously support our local restaurants and provide nourishment for our community members in need. To support this community effort, you can purchase e-gift cards from partner restaurants, and those e-gift cards will be transferred automatically to the meal-providing organization of your choice. Questions about Testing? If you are currently sick: If you are sick with even mild symptoms of COVID-19, please call your doctor or your nearest urgent care center to get tested for the disease right away.
If you are sick but are having trouble getting tested, please call the County Public Health Department at 805-781-5500. More testing information is available here. If you think you had COVID-19 but were not tested: Antibody testing can demonstrate whether people may have been infected with COVID-19 in the past. At this time there is only one approved antibody test in the country. There are a number of clinical trials for antibody testing underway in California. However, these tests are not yet broadly available.County Public Health Officer Penny Borenstein would like to see those tests become widely available locally and is coordinating with state and national public health agencies to that end, but does not yet have a timeline for when that will occur.

Beware of Scams and Price GougingSeveral community members were the target of phone scams involving the purchase of gift cards to be used for posting bail at the Sheriff’s Department and to receive food from our County food delivery program.
Community members will never be asked to pay for bail with gift cards and will never be asked to pay for our food delivery service. The County will NEVER call you to request payment for fees in the form of gift cards.
Any person who observes or is a target of price gouging or a scam can contact the District Attorney’s Office at (805) 781-5800 or by email at:?SLOConsumerComplaint@co.slo.ca.us or any local law enforcement agency.

City Services: Public Works Essential City Services are still being provided while following social distancing guidelines. This includes our Public Works Department who is working hard to ensure all Public Works systems maintain continuous operation during the pandemic with staff following physical distancing guidelines. You may begin to see City staff using cloth face coverings in situations where physical distancing is not possible, based on federal, state and county guidance. This means we can continue to count on safe and healthy drinking water, reliable sewage treatment, and continuing street maintenance and repair. We ask for your help in making sure we continue to maintain a healthy sewage system by remembering that Wipes Clog Pipes! Avoid sewer backups and protect your pipes. Dispose of these items in the trash not the toilet: - Disinfecting wipes
- Baby wipes
- Towelettes
- Paper towels
- Facial tissues
