School Openings
California schools will need to follow the guidance below for the fall of 2020 and beyond:
Priorities:- Safe in-person school
- Mask requirement (for 3rd grade and above)
- Physical distancing
- Regular testing
- Rigorous distance learning (more details below)
Criteria to open in-person:- Must be off monitoring list for 14 consecutive days
- If on monitoring list, schools must open with distance learning
- 3rd grade and up wear masks
- Regular staff testing (contract tracers will be prioritizing schools)
Rigorous Distance Learning:- Access to devices and connectivity
- Daily live interaction with teachers and other students
- Challenging assignments equivalent to in-person classes
- Adapted lessons for ESL students and those with special needs
Note: State appropriated $5.3 billion to help make this happen
When to close in-person learning:- Schools will first consult a public health officer
- Class cohort goes home if there is one confirmed case
- School goes home if there is a 5% case rate
- District goes home if 25% of schools close in 14 days
“Learning is non-negotiable. So is safety.”
This mandate applies to public and private schools. University guidelines are being developed.
