Paso Airport Welcomes Space Tech Companies Working on NASA ProjectThis month, the Paso Robles Airport was host to a group of space technology companies conducting tests as part of NASA's multi-phase Artemis project, the first step in the next era of human exploration of space. Together with commercial and international partners, NASA's Artemis mission will establish a sustainable presence on the Moon to prepare for missions to Mars. During Artemis II, four astronauts will fly around the Moon to test NASA's foundational human deep space exploration capabilities. Artemis III, currently planned for 2025, will mark humanity’s first return to the lunar surface in more than 50 years. NASA will make history by sending the first humans to explore the region near the lunar South Pole.

Major space initiatives such as the Artemis project involve a wide range of specialized engineering firms to create the new technologies required for space exploration. Among the companies participating in the week of testing at the Paso Robles Airport was Stellar Exploration, a company that designs and builds miniaturized aerospace solutions for military, civil and commercial customers. Recently, Stellar Exploration provided the micro-propulsion system for NASA's CAPSTONE project, a microwave oven–sized CubeSat weighing just 55 pounds that has been in lunar orbit since November 13, 2022. Stellar Exploration has also signed a Letter of Intent to house their business at the Paso Robles Airport if and when it is granted a Spaceport license from the FAA.

New Test Site Created at Paso AirportThe Paso Robles Airport has recently renovated an area of the airport property that had not been actively used for decades and can now be utilized as a testing site by engineering firms developing small-scale next-generation space technologies. With the addition of the new testing site, companies have expressed interest in permanently basing business operations in Paso Robles.

The new testing site was created using recycled road materials collected from various street repair projects around the city. The material was used to rebuild the original access to the site that dates from WWII when the Paso Robles Airport was originally built for the US Military. The test site construction project was also an opportunity for new hires in the City's Street Division to train on the heavy equipment they will be using while working on Paso's city streets.
